Where to Measure for Dresses
Tailor's Tape Guide1. Natural Waist (Narrowest Point)
Wrap tape measure around your torso at your narrowest natural waistline (usually 1–2 inches above your belly button). Keep the tape level and snug, but not digging in. Breathe normally.
2. Full Hips (Widest Point of Seat)
Stand with feet together. Measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks (typically 7–9 inches below your natural waist). Ensure tape remains completely parallel to the floor.

Why One Dress Size Does Not Fit Every Style
Unlike pants which focus on lower-body geometry, a dress drapes over your bust, ribcage, waist, and hips simultaneously. Most women do not possess the exact 3-point proportions used by standard off-the-rack grading tables.
A-Line & Fit-and-Flare
Fitted through the chest and waist, then widens generously over the hips. If your hip measurement is larger than your bust/waist, size for your bust and waist. The flared skirt will easily accommodate your hips.
Sheath & Bodycon
Fitted closely to the contours from chest to hemline. In woven fabrics, you must size for your largest dimension (often the hips or bust) and have a tailor take in the excess at the waist.
Wrap & Empire Waist
Features adjustable ties or a raised waistline directly under the bust. These styles offer the greatest forgiveness for fluctuating measurements or curvy proportions.
