How to Accurately Measure Foot Length
The single most reliable anchor for shoe sizing is your actual foot length measured in centimeters or inches:
- Tape a blank sheet of paper to the floor against a flat wall.
- Stand on the paper with your heel touching the wall, wearing the thickness of socks you plan to wear with the shoes.
- Mark the furthest tip of your longest toe (which is often the second toe, not the big toe) with a pencil held straight up.
- Measure the distance from the edge of the paper to your pencil mark using a ruler in centimeters or inches.
- Measure both feet and always choose the size that accommodates your larger foot. Add 0.5 cm (about 0.2 inches) of wiggle room for running or hiking footwear.
Beware the “Add 1.5” Myth
Many generic websites claim that Women's shoe size is always Men's size plus 1.5. While this is true for certain brands like Nike, New Balance, and Brooks, Adidas officially uses an exact 1.0 difference (e.g., Men 8.0 = Women 9.0). In Puma, the difference is 1.0. In Vans unisex models, men's and women's sizes are paired specifically. Never rely on arbitrary rules across different manufacturers.
